Our Vines

Vignamaggio’s wines come from 61 vineyard plots grouped into nine areas. The wealth of variety offered to us by the land is an absolute privilege, allowing us to create a variety of wines in synchronicity with their terroir. Our team can decide whether to create an assemblage, a harmonious representation of the characteristics of each plot, or to focus on single-variety wines, each from a specific vineyard with its own distinctive identity.

Fresh wines endowed with fruitiness and sapidity
Altitude 400 MASL – Geological Formation «Macigno Sandstone» Predominantly south-west facing – Area 4.75 ha Variety: Sangiovese

This is the highest area of the farm’s historical nucleus, situated above the municipal road to Lamole, with predominantly sandy soil, characteristic of the Lamole area. The average age of the vineyards is about 20 years. The Sangiovese in this area produces fresh, medium-bodied wines with a good fruit component.

Elegant wines endowed with finesse and lively tannins
Altitude 340 MASL – Geological Formation «Macigno Sandstone» Predominantly west facing – Area 4.5 ha Varieties: mainly Merlot and Sangiovese with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon

Adjacent to the highest area of the farm’s historical nucleus, on a slightly concave plateau with soils that are a blend of those typical of the area of Lamole and those in the valley with a richer clay component. The Sangiovese from this area produces fresh, fruity, well-structured wines. The Santa Maria vineyard has been in this area for almost 25 years and is where the grapes for the new Merlot single-variety wine come from. The age of this vineyard endows this wine with complexity and elegant tannins, giving it excellent longevity potential.

Very well-structured wines with a good polyphenol content.
Altitude 275/340 MASL – Geological Formation «Argille Scagliose Chaotic Complex» sandy-clay terrain typology Predominantly south-west facing – Area 13 ha Varieties: Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc

This area is in Vignamaggio’s historical nucleus, a rocky and not very fertile terrain, with more clay content than the previous areas. The Sangiovese in this area, also characterised by an intense luminosity (especially in summer), produces a concentration of polyphenols during maturation. The grapes for the Gran Selezione are usually from here and from the lower areas. For the most recent plantings, predominantly young clones with sparse bunches and small berries with a greater skin–pulp ratio were used. The vineyards are between 2 & 24 years old. In this area, a terraced vineyard with traditional cavalcapoggio rows was created. From a plot in this large vineyard, where the vines are about 25 years old, hails the Vignamaggio Cabernet Franc, the first in our territorial single-variety range.

Very intense wines with elegant tannins
Altitude 260/340 MASL – Geological Formation «Argille Scagliose chaotic complex» clay loam terrain typology Predominantly east facing – Area 14.5 ha Varieties: predominantly Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc with small amounts of Merlot, Trebbiano, Malvasia and Viognier

Vined area of the farm’s historical nucleus, characterised by rich soils and less sun exposure. Other than Sangiovese, it offers a Cabernet Franc that blends the expressive typicity of the variety with polyphenolic finesse and fully expresses the complexity of the Solatio vineyard. The full-bodied Merlot, also with elegant tannins, is balanced by a subtle expression of the galestro terrain. A plot in this area provides the white grapes for the Vinsanto.

Fresh wine with moderate tannins
Altitude 260 MASL – Geological Formation «Argille Scagliose chaotic complex», clay loam terrain typology Predominantly east facing – Area 2.50 ha Variety: Sangiovese

This is an area in the farm’s historical nucleus with more of a clay terrain type and not much sunlight. Dry years, like we’ve seen over the past 17 years, have provided interesting expressions of Sangiovese.

Complex wines with great ageing potential, very sophisticated
Altitude: 330/400 MASL – Geological Formation «Argille Scagliose chaotic complex», sandy clay terrain typology Predominantly south-west facing – Area 5.70 ha Variety: Sangiovese

These are the most recently acquired vineyards that fall into the Panzano in Chianti area and that have a history of producing excellent results with Sangiovese. The terrain is less ‘heavy’ and generally produces Sangiovese grapes with sparse bunches and berries rich in noble substances. Some distinctive characteristics of these vineyards are responsible for very elegant wines with longevity. This is the origin of the single-variety Sangiovese that completes Vignamaggio’s territorial ‘single-variety’ range.

Wines with excellent structure and complexity that evolve over time
Altitude: 330/400 MASL – Geological Formation «Argille Scagliose chaotic complex», sandy clay terrain typology Predominantly west facing – Area 6.70 ha Varieties: predominantly Sangiovese and Merlot

These are the youngest vineyards but are already producing remarkable results: they consistently make structured wines that need time to refine their characteristics but evolve with great expressive potential and longevity.

Structured wines with very elegant tannins
Altitude: 340/450 MASL – Geological Formation: predominantly argilloschist (galestro) Predominantly west/south-west facing – Area 5.90 ha Varieties: Sangiovese with a percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon

A group of historical vineyards in the Panzano in Chianti region, in an area called La Conca d’Ora (Golden Chalice) because of the number of great wines that hail from here. It is south-west facing and enjoys abundant sunlight without hills and forests surrounding it. The wines it produces are full bodied and complex with very elegant tannins but, most importantly, they have excellent ageing potential, and this is the reason for their central role in the Gran Selezione.

New
Altitude: 300 MASL – Geological Formation «Argille Scagliose chaotic complex», sandy clay terrain typology Predominantly west/south-west facing – Area 5.90 ha Varieties: currently Sangiovese with small quantities of Trebbiano and Malvasia

This is the newest vineyard, bought in 2017, a section of which belonged to Vignamaggio until 30 years ago. Still being researched from an agronomic perspective, this is a plateau with full sun exposure where the vineyards are characterised by early maturation.
